SAMBA DISTRICT DETAILED PROFILE
- Samba district came into existence in the year 2007 and was carved out of Jammu district and some parts of Udhampur and Kathua districts.
- The geographical area of the district is 914 sq. km.
- Samba is also known as the "Land of Rajput Warriors".
- Samba was principally established somewhere in 1400 A.D.
- As per folklore, Malh Dev is regarded as the founder of Samba.
- Samba came under the supremacy of Jammu during the period of Hari Devin 1816.
- Suchet Singh, the younger brother of Raja Gulab Singh was made the Raja of Bandralta and Samba in 1822.
- Samba was known for its 22 Mandies which were established by Raja Suchet Singh. He also builds the famous Samba Fort.
- Samba was annexed to Jammu and Kashmir by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1846.
- The recipient of the first gallantry award of independent India, Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamval, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) was a resident of Samba. He is remembered as the "Saviour of Kashmir."
- Samba is famous for traditional Calico Printing. It is also known as "City of Sheets".
- Samba is separated from the Jammu district by Purmandal bridge.
- The two important rivers of district Samba are Basanter and Devak or Devika.
- Basantar, on the banks of which Samba town is located, is famous for the Battle of Basanter, fought between India and Pakistan in 1971.
- Devak river, also called "Gupta Ganga" has Vijaypur town on its banks.
- Devak river is also known as Sister of Ganga River.
- The majority of the people of Samba are Rajputs mainly Sambyals, Slathias and Khajurias are their Rajpurohits. Their main focus is to join defence forces.
